$8 Million Crypto Kidnapping Lands Texas Brothers 15-Year Prison Terms

In brief

  • Texas brothers Raymond and Isiah Garcia were sentenced to a combined 326 months for a September 2025 home-invasion robbery that forced a Minnesota man to hand over more than $8 million in crypto; both pleaded guilty in June.
  • The pair zip-tied the family and held them at gunpoint for over nine hours, even driving the victim to a cabin to retrieve hardware wallets, before fleeing and being arrested near Houston.
  • Chainalysis logged 46 violent incidents against crypto holders and $30 million-plus stolen in early 2026.

Two Texas brothers have been sentenced to a combined 326 months in prison for a violent home-invasion robbery in which they held a Minnesota family at gunpoint for hours and forced the father to hand over more than $8 million in cryptocurrency.

Raymond Christian Garcia and Isiah Angelo Garcia, both of Waller, Texas, were sentenced on Thursday to 180 months and 186 months respectively, or 15 and 15-and-a-half years, by U.S. District Judge Donovan Frank in St. Paul, according to the Justice Department. Both had pleaded guilty in June.

According to court documents, the brothers traveled from Texas to Grant, Minnesota, and on Sept. 19, 2025, broke into the victim’s home, zip-tied the family and held them at gunpoint for more than nine hours while demanding access to the father’s crypto accounts.

When he failed to transfer the amount they expected, they forced him to drive one of the brothers to the family’s cabin in upstate Minnesota to retrieve additional hardware wallets and move the funds. In total, they compelled him to transfer over $8 million. The pair fled after the victim’s son called 911, and were later arrested near Houston.

“The Garcia brothers committed a brazen and calculated act of violence against the victim and his family,” U.S. Attorney Daniel Rosen said in a statement. The FBI’s Christopher Dotson said the brothers “violated the sanctity of a home” in “a brazen act of violence and greed.”

The case is a stark example of a “wrench attack,” in which criminals use physical force rather than hacking to seize crypto.

Such attacks have surged alongside crypto’s rising prices: Chainalysis counted 46 violent incidents in the first half of 2026 with more than $30 million stolen, while CertiK pegged losses even higher. Recent cases span a French kidnapping in which workers’ children were held hostage and a UK home invasion that ended in prison terms for the attackers.

The sentencing offers one of the clearest signals yet that U.S. courts are treating crypto wrench attacks as serious violent crime.
